Thousands of Iranians have taken to the streets chanting “Death to America!” following the confirmed death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, his national security adviser, and the head of the Revolutionary Guard.

State television announced the news with presenters visibly in tears, describing Khamenei’s death as an act of martyrdom. According to official messaging, the Supreme Leader “drank the pure sweetness of martyrdom” and “ascended to the Heavenly Kingdom” during the holy month of Ramadan.

While many Iranians gathered in mourning, other images circulating online show groups celebrating Khamenei’s death and burning religious symbols—highlighting deep divisions within Iranian society. Uncertainty now surrounds the question of who will assume power. Several sources claim that before his death, Khamenei named four potential successors. Another scenario being discussed is the formation of an interim leadership council until a new Supreme Leader is chosen.

The official announcement stated:

“The Leader and Imam of the Muslims, His Excellency Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Hosseini Khamenei, in the path of defending the sacred sanctuary of the Islamic Republic of Iran, has tasted the pure sweetness of martyrdom and joined the Supreme Heavenly Kingdom. The Supreme Leader of the Islamic community, Ayatollah Imam Khamenei, after drinking from the full cup of martyrdom during the holy month of Ramadan, has ascended to the Most Exalted Kingdom.”
